Tariffs Will Not Raise Americans’ Taxes No Matter What AOC Says

Greenville, S.C., USA - October 15 2020: Donald Trump walking outdoors, raising his fist in a gesture of triumph

Noted economic expert Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who will probably be the leader of the Democrat Party at some point in the next ten years, is blasting President Donald Trump for his threat of crippling tariffs against Colombia.

A short-lived fight between our president and President Gustavo Petro happened over the weekend. Petro turned away two US military flights carrying deported Colombians back to their homeland. Ocasio-Cortez insists that President Trump’s threatened tariffs would cause massive inflation for all Americans.

AOC was just one of many Trump critics who freaked out after the president stood up for Americans over the weekend. If you missed the very brief spat, Trump threatened major sanctions against Colombia in response to their refusal to take back their illegal aliens. He threatened a 25% tariff on all Colombian imports, which would increase to 50% in seven days. He also threatened to revoke the travel visas of Colombian politicians, so they can’t vacation in the US any longer.

Within hours, the tough-talking President Petro was offering his personal plane to President Trump to help transport the Colombian illegal aliens home. Total capitulation within a matter of a few hours.

The only way that Trump could have humiliated Petro even worse would have been to drive off with his wife in a sports car. Then again, Petro might not have minded that since he’s embroiled in a scandal with a transgender news anchor in Colombia right now.

“To ‘punish’ Colombia, Trump is about to make every American pay even more for coffee,” huffed Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez on social media.

“Remember: *WE* pay the tariffs, not Colombia,” she added.

Uh… that’s literally the opposite of how tariffs work, sugar-pants. Maybe sit this one out while the adults are talking?

The reason why President Petro begged President Trump for mercy so quickly is because Colombian farmers are loading cut flowers destined for America on the boats right now. About 28% of all cut flower sales in the US happen on Valentine’s Day in a couple of weeks. Approximately 70% of all flowers sold in America come from Colombia.

Wait, how did that happen?

Back in 2008, President George W. Bush rammed a free trade agreement through with Colombia. That agreement eliminated all tariffs on imported goods from Colombia. Since Colombia is a sh**hole country and a failed narco-state, they made out like bandits from this free trade deal. American flower nurseries couldn’t compete with the low prices that Colombia offered on flowers.

What did America get out of this free trade deal with our precious allies in Colombia?

Take a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway sometime and you’ll see. The route between Monterey and Pescadero is truly eye-opening. It’s kind of a dump these days. There are a lot of barren fields and rotting greenhouses crumbling to the ground.

That stretch of California used to be incredibly beautiful. More than 65% of America’s cut flowers and roses grew along that little 75-mile stretch of highway. It was a thriving, $4 billion-a-year sector of American agriculture. Now it’s just an ugly stretch of shattered hopes and dreams, and small American farms that were destroyed by globalism and free trade.

We got cheaper flowers for a few years. Big whoop. Now that Colombia has cornered the market after destroying American flower nurseries, they’re jacking the prices up every year and making out like bandits. Why is Donald Trump the only person in Washington, DC, who sees this and understands it?

“Trump is all about making inflation WORSE for working class Americans, not better,” continued Ocasio-Cortez, proving once again that she has no ability to just shut up for a few moments. “He’s lining the pockets of himself and the billionaire class.”

What President Trump is doing is standing up for the American people once again, because so many of our previous leaders have not. America didn’t need flowers from Colombia. We had an entire thriving domestic source for flowers that has now been almost completely replaced by a free trade deal. Colombia may have dodged a 50% tariff this time, but they’ll be paying higher tariffs soon enough.

This means that any Americans who want to open a flower nursery business in the near future will actually have a chance of succeeding. That’s what this ongoing battle over tariffs is really about. When done right, tariffs protect American workers and businesses. “Free” trade and no tariffs—which is what Colombia currently enjoys—is all downside for the United States.
