Germany's Populist Tidal Wave: AfD Surges to Record 9-Point Lead While the Establishment Panics

Turns out when you spend a decade letting millions of unvetted migrants flood your country, refuse to listen to voters screaming about it, and then lecture those same voters about tolerance — they eventually find someone who will listen. Germany's AfD just surged to a record 9-point lead over Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU in the latest YouGov poll, and the German political establishment is in full meltdown mode.

Who could have possibly seen this coming? Oh right — everyone with a functioning brain.

The numbers are devastating for Germany's ruling class. The latest YouGov poll puts the AfD at 29%, up one point, while the CDU/CSU has cratered to just 20%, down two points. That's not a gap. That's a canyon. The CDU/CSU is now sitting at an all-time low in YouGov polling, which is the kind of milestone that makes party leaders update their LinkedIn profiles.

The Greens limp along at 14%. The SPD — the party that literally ran Germany for years — is down to 12%. The Left Party matches them at 12%. The FDP, under newly elected chairman Wolfgang Kubicki, just barely clawed its way back to 5% for the first time in a year and a half. And the BSW sits at a paltry 4%. In other words, the entire German political establishment combined can barely keep pace with one populist party that the media has spent years trying to destroy.

Sound familiar? It should.

This is the same playbook we watched unfold right here at home. The elites ignore the voters. The media smears anyone who raises concerns about immigration as a racist. The political class forms coalitions specifically designed to keep the populist outsiders away from power. And then — whoops — the populist outsiders win anyway, because it turns out people care more about their safety and their country than they do about being called names by newspaper columnists.

Chancellor Merz has been trying to walk a tightrope — tough talk on immigration to steal AfD voters while refusing to actually work with the AfD on anything. Roughly half of CDU voters reportedly reject a coalition with the AfD, which means the other half are wondering why they're still voting CDU at all. That math doesn't end well for Merz.

Here's the part that really stings for the establishment: even the World Cup can't save them. A new survey found that 65% of Germans want the upcoming World Cup kept separate from politics. Among AfD voters, that number rockets to 82%. Even 74% of CDU/CSU voters agree. The only groups who want to inject politics into soccer? Left Party voters at 41% and Green voters at 34%. Because of course they do.

Maybe if the German national team spent more time winning games and less time making political statements, they wouldn't have failed to advance past the preliminary round in the last two World Cups. Just a thought.

The global populist wave that carried President Trump back to the White House isn't slowing down. It's accelerating. And it just crashed into Europe's largest economy with the force of a freight train. The pattern is identical everywhere: the ruling class imports chaos, demands gratitude, punishes dissent, and then acts stunned when voters revolt.

A 9-point lead isn't a trend. It's a verdict.
