Hasan Piker stood on a stage at his Fear& live tour stop this week, microphone in hand, and performed a song called "We Are Charlie Kirk." The audience laughed. They clapped. They sang along to a number mocking the assassination of a 32-year-old conservative activist who's been dead less than a year.
Piker — the communist internet celebrity who once told his audience that "America deserved 9/11"— has made gloating over Kirk's murder something of a recurring segment. This isn't the first time he's done it. It's not even the second. But this time he put it to music, workshopped it into a performance piece, and took it on the road in front of a paying audience.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated roughly a year ago. We are just under two weeks from the first anniversary. And instead of the usual cycle — outrage, then memory, then quiet — the left has decided the anniversary tour should be a comedy special. Piker didn't stumble into this. He rehearsed it. He titled it. He performed it under stage lights to a crowd that bought tickets.
When Kirk was first killed, there was at least a pretense of restraint from the institutional left. Some progressives pushed back against the open celebrations. Media figures offered the requisite "we don't condone violence" before immediately pivoting to Kirk's politics as if that explained everything. But that phase is over. The guardrails came off, and nobody in progressive media bothered to put them back.
This is the same political movement that canonized "when they go low, we go high" as a bumper sticker. The same crowd that turned Luigi Mangione into a folk hero. The same people who lecture the rest of us about "stochastic terrorism" every time a conservative commentator uses sharp language on a podcast. But a left-wing streamer with millions of followers writes an actual song celebrating an actual murder, and the content moderation teams at every major platform suddenly develop amnesia.
What Piker revealed isn't new. It's just louder now. The left's position on political violence has always had an asterisk: violence is abhorrent, unless the target had the wrong politics, in which case it's complicated, and eventually it's a punchline.
