Bill Clinton's Own Pollster Says the Democratic Party Has a Socialist Problem — And Possible Foreign Backers

Mark Penn spent six years as chief White House pollster and strategic advisor to President Bill Clinton. He's not a Heritage Foundation fellow. He's not a Fox News contributor workshopping hot takes. He's one of the architects of the last version of the Democratic Party that could win a general election.

And he just used the Wall Street Journal to call his own party a socialist front with potential foreign financing.

Penn's op-ed, titled "The Socialist Threat Is Real," published July 6 in the Wall Street Journal, argued that Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates are systematically defeating mainstream Democrats in primaries across New York, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. The pattern isn't isolated upsets. It's a coordinated replacement of the party's center with its fringe.

"America will be in serious trouble if Democrats fail to defend their party," Penn wrote. That's not a Republican talking point. That's a warning from inside the building.

The most striking passage was Penn's description of who's actually driving the movement. This "revolution," he wrote, "is driven not by the working class but by the urban professional class that is willing to support candidates who celebrate 9/11, cheer at the massacre of 1,000 Israeli and American kids, would defund the police, abolish prisons, end private property and open the borders." That's a Clinton Democrat drawing a line from DSA ideology straight to the most extreme positions in American politics — and he's not exaggerating for effect. He's cataloging a platform.

Then Penn went further than anyone in his position has gone before. "Lawmakers, law-enforcement agencies and journalists should investigate the DSA to see if it is being funded by foreign governments and interests," he wrote. A former Clinton White House insider calling for a federal probe into whether the organization reshaping the Democratic Party takes money from hostile foreign governments.

That call doesn't land in a vacuum. Federal investigators are already examining whether elements of the far-left activist NGO sphere have been influenced by foreign-linked networks, with the DOJ running a grand jury probe into Neville Roy Singham's Marxist NGO empire and its connections to China and Cuba. Senator Marco Rubio has pushed sanctions on Cuban influence networks operating inside the United States.

The DSA hasn't exactly helped its own case on the optics front. Hasan Piker, described as the organization's unofficial spokesman, has publicly stated: "Yeah kill them! Kill those motherfuckers and murder those motherfuckers in the streets. Let the streets soak in their fucking red capitalist blood." That's the public voice of the movement Penn is warning about.

President Trump weighed in on Truth Social: "The Communists are finally making their move. I've been waiting and preparing for this for a long time."

The Democratic establishment's response to the DSA surge has been somewhere between accommodation and surrender. Penn's op-ed is notable precisely because it breaks from that pattern — a credentialed party insider saying publicly what most moderate Democrats will only say at dinner parties. The DSA isn't an ally pulling the party left. It's a hostile takeover with a membership card.

Penn warned that "New York and other cities will decay further" if the trend continues. He's watched this movie before. The last time the Democratic Party lurched this far left, it handed Richard Nixon 49 states.

The difference now is that the people doing the lurching might be cashing checks from Beijing and Havana. Penn thinks that's worth investigating. The fact that he's the one saying it — not a Republican, not a commentator, but Clinton's own strategist — tells you how far past the guardrails this has gone.
