Minneapolis police executed a search warrant on the apartment of Rep. Ilhan Omar's son Adnan Omar on Tuesday night. Inside, they found guns and ammunition. They also found his 22-year-old roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi, who now sits in Hennepin County Jail on a weapons charge.

Abdi has 10 prior convictions on his record. The guns-and-ammo discovery was not his first interaction with law enforcement this week — or even that day.

Abdi had been pulled over earlier on August 27 during a traffic stop for driving without proof of insurance and without a license. When police impounded his vehicle, they found a firearm inside. Hours later came the raid on the apartment he shares with Adnan Omar, where officers recovered additional weapons and ammunition. The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed Abdi was arrested "without incident."

Abdi's rap sheet paints a picture that goes well beyond a single weapons charge. Among his 10 convictions is a 2024 felony for driving 108 miles per hour. He was also sentenced to 2 years of probation for fleeing police. This is not a man who had one bad night. This is a man who has had at least 10 documented bad decisions, and that's only counting the ones that ended in conviction.

Rep. Ilhan Omar is one of the most vocal gun-control advocates in Congress. She has called for banning so-called assault weapons, expanding background checks, and restricting civilian access to firearms at every opportunity. Her son's apartment just got raided, and police walked out with guns and ammo.

This isn't the first time Adnan Omar has made headlines adjacent to law enforcement. Back in December, an incident involving ICE drew attention to the congresswoman's son. At the time, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons responded to Rep. Omar's public criticisms by calling them a "ridiculous effort to unfairly demonize our law enforcement officers."

The broader pattern writes itself. The loudest voices demanding that law-abiding Americans surrender their Second Amendment rights keep turning up in proximity to people who don't follow the laws already on the books. It's not that every politician is responsible for the actions of their adult children's roommates — that would be an unreasonable standard. But when your entire political identity is built on restricting firearms, and the apartment your son lives in gets raided for illegal weapons, the contrast is unavoidable.

Abdi was driving without a license, without insurance, with a gun in his car, carrying 10 convictions, and living in the apartment of a sitting congresswoman's son. Police found more guns when they searched the home.

The laws Rep. Omar wants to pass aren't aimed at people like Abdulrahman Abdi. They never are.
