New Mexico state Representative Joseph Hernandez was found running naked through a Chicago hotel, banging on doors, during a national legislative conference. Police were called. A report was filed. And on September 1st, Hernandez announced he was dropping his re-election bid for District 4.
His campaign lasted less time than his clothes stayed on.
Hernandez, a first-term Democrat elected in 2024, initially described the episode as a "negative interaction" with hotel security and police. That's one way to put it. The police report, which became public shortly after, painted a more vivid picture — one involving hallways, nudity, and a sitting lawmaker treating a Marriott like it was spring break in Cancun.
Once the details went wide, Hernandez acknowledged his conduct and said he was "seeking professional help for problems involving alcohol." His withdrawal statement said he needed to focus on "his health and family while continuing to serve the people who elected him." He's still serving, by the way. He dropped out of the race. He didn't resign the seat.
Republican House Leader Gail Armstrong called for Hernandez to resign outright. Democratic House Speaker Javier Martínez took the softer route, saying he was "disappointed but wanted Hernandez to get the help he needed." Which is the standard Democratic playbook when one of their own gets caught doing something indefensible — express concern, wish them well, and hope everyone moves on by Thursday.
Hernandez sat on two committees: the House Appropriations and Finance Committee and the House Transportation, Public Works and Capital Improvements Committee. Transportation and public works. The man who couldn't navigate a hotel hallway with pants on was helping oversee New Mexico's infrastructure.
District 4 covers Shiprock, Hogback, and mostly Navajo communities in northwestern New Mexico. With Hernandez out and the November 3 election less than 75 days away, Republican candidate Heather Ellison now faces a scrambled field. Former state Representative Anthony Allison has also filed for the seat, though he was listed as disqualified at the time of Hernandez's withdrawal.
The whole saga unfolded in the span of days — from the Chicago incident, to the police report going public, to the apology, to the exit. That's a faster collapse than most political careers manage, and Hernandez didn't even need a scandal involving money or classified documents. Just a hotel corridor and a missing pair of pants.
