A former US Attorney who viciously prosecuted peaceful January 6 protesters went on a stabbing rampage last week. He sent one person to the hospital and terrorized two other people. But rather than being subjected to the humiliating and overreaching prosecutorial misconduct that he specializes in, Patrick Scruggs was quickly released on bail within 24 hours.

Scruggs worked for the US Attorney’s office for ten years in Florida. That was the state that had more January 6 protesters arrested and indefinitely imprisoned without trial than any other.

Prosecutors went insanely overboard and continue to do so with the January 6 cases, even for the most minor misdemeanor offenses. There’s a different set of rules, however, when Democrats commit actual acts of violence and terrorism.

Patrick Scruggs was driving home on September 26th, just last week, when he got in a fender-bender on I-275 in Tampa, Florida. The driver who hit his sedan was waiting patiently in his vehicle. Police say Scruggs smashed the other driver’s window open and proceeded to stab the man multiple times. A couple stopped to try to help after the accident, and Scruggs waved the knife at them and terrorized them before fleeing the scene.

In other words, Patrick Scruggs is accused of committing a crime that was more violent and terrifying than anything that any January 6er did in the mostly peaceful protest. The other motorist was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Scruggs was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault and armed burglary. He was in jail for less than a full day when he was allowed to post bail and walk free.

That’s a far cry from the treatment that Scruggs has afforded Trump supporters. Take, for example, the “Lectern Guy” from the protest. His real name is Adam Johnson. He picked up Nancy Pelosi’s lectern on January 6th and carried it through the Capitol rotunda, so his friend could take the now-famous picture of him waving and appearing to carry it off.

What’s not conveyed in the photo is that Johnson took the lectern back and placed it where he had picked it up. He didn’t take it home and he didn’t damage it.

Adam Johnson walked through an open door at the Capitol where hundreds of other people were already present. He picked up a lectern, walked about 20 yards with it, and put it back. He did not harm anyone and he left after that.

As Johnson noted in an op-ed about his case in The Federalist, “I had made the inexcusable decision to enter a building through open doors and carefully move furniture without permission.”

Patrick Scruggs was the US Attorney assigned to Adam Johnson’s case. When Johnson was first arrested, he was placed in solitary confinement for four days. He wasn’t allowed to shower or brush his teeth during that time.

At his arraignment, Scruggs argued that Johnson’s conditions of release—if he was to be released at all—had to fit the seriousness of the “crimes” that he committed. The federal government confiscated Adam Johnson’s firearms and his passport. He was given a nightly curfew. To make sure he was following the curfew, he was forced to wear an ankle monitor. He had to submit to being drug tested at any time of the day or night, at random, by the federal government. Plus, Adam Johnson was not allowed to travel outside of a few counties in Florida near where he lived.

Johnson was sentenced to 75 days in prison, a year of supervised release, and a $5,000 fine for gently moving some furniture.

Patrick Scruggs, the prosecutor who demanded those outrageous release conditions for Adam Johnson, was released with no conditions in less than a day after he nearly killed some poor guy who was unlucky enough to get in a fender-bender with him. The system takes care of its own.

We see this over and over again and it is an outrage every time it happens. The neighbor who tackled Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and beat him up, breaking several of Paul’s ribs in the process, was sentenced to just nine months in jail. Meanwhile, a Trump supporter who moved a little fence at the Capitol on January 6th got 17 years in prison.
