When Even Oregon Is in Play, It's Not a Wave — It's a Tsunami

Oregon hasn't elected a Republican governor since Victor Atiyeh left office in 1982. Forty-four years. And right now, Republican Christine Drazan leads Democratic incumbent Tina Kotek 47% to 46% among likely voters who've indicated their leanings, according to the latest Oregon Public Broadcasting poll.

That's one week out. In bluest of blue Oregon.

The margin of error is 3.24 percentage points, which means this is technically a toss-up. But the direction of travel is what matters. A separate Oregonian poll from October 1 had Kotek ahead 46% to 44%. She was leading. Now she's not. And her unfavorable rating has climbed to 60% — against a favorable of just 38%. Drazan's favorables sit at 45%. In a state that hasn't gone red in a governor's race since Reagan's first term, the Republican is more liked than the Democrat.

It's also important to note that polls have historically undercounted Republican voters by 3-4 percentage points.

Kotek's housing record is part of the collapse. She set a goal of 36,000 new housing permits in 2026. The actual number: roughly 9,700. That's not a shortfall. That's 73% of the promise evaporating. Axios reported on the campaign's internal troubles, and the October debate made them public. Drazan pinned Kotek to the wall: "You just can't stop… I can't believe you're not taking more responsibility."

Oregon is the headline nobody expected. But it's not the only data point.

The financial infrastructure behind the Republican surge is staggering. The RNC has raised $341.5 million through October 14, with $76.2 million cash on hand. The NRCC reported $61.3 million available in October. House Republicans pulled in roughly $50 million in Q3 fundraising alone. On the Trump-aligned super PAC side, spending between early September and October 14 hit approximately $277 million. MAGA Inc. transferred $200 million to the No Going Back PAC and another $25 million to the Safety and Affordability PAC, per the Associated Press. MAGA Inc. entered September with roughly $416 million and still had $164 million left as of October 14 — putting potential Trump network spending north of $400 million before Election Day.

That's not hope money. That's deployment money. You don't spend $400 million playing defense.

In 2022, Drazan lost Oregon by about 3.5 percentage points in a three-way race that split the anti-Kotek vote. This time it's a head-to-head contest, Kotek's approval is underwater by 22 points, and the national funding environment favors Republicans by a margin that makes the 2022 cycle look like a bake sale.

The last Republican to win the Oregon governor's mansion moved out of it the same year Michael Jackson released "Thriller." Drazan is polling ahead with a week to go, the incumbent is at 60% unfavorable, and the Republican financial machine has more cash on hand than most Senate campaigns raise in a cycle.

Victor Atiyeh has been waiting 44 years for company.
