Trump's New Press Secretary Is a Licensed Attorney Who Told the Left She'd Never Take Off Her MAGA Hat

Katie Zacharia once wrote in a New York Post op-ed that when confronted about her support for President Trump, "I responded that I would never take my Trump hat off to appease the left." On Friday, Trump handed her the most visible hat in Washington.

The James S. Brady Press Briefing Room has been dark since September 3. That's about to change.

President Trump announced via Truth Social late last week that Zacharia, a Pepperdine-educated attorney and senior communications adviser at Truth Social, would replace Karoline Leavitt as White House Press Secretary. Leavitt departed in late August to spend more time with her young children, leaving the podium vacant for over five weeks. The last person to take questions from the briefing room was Vice President JD Vance, who addressed reporters on September 3 — and that was it.

No interim replacement. No guest appearances. Just silence from the most famous lectern in American politics.

Zacharia's résumé reads like someone who was built for this job. She's a licensed attorney with degrees from Pepperdine University — undergraduate in 2007, law degree in 2011. She served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year, worked as general counsel for Richard Grenell's Fix California advocacy group, and has logged time as a commentator on Fox News, Newsmax, CNN, and One America News. She also worked on Trump's campaign across key swing states — all seven of which Trump won.

Trump's announcement carried the kind of personal endorsement he reserves for people he actually trusts. "She has an unblemished record of support, and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning," Trump wrote. "I am confident that Katie will deliver strong results for our Country as the next White House Press Secretary."

Zacharia responded on social media with, "Serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark is the honor of a lifetime. Following the fabulous Karoline Leavitt is a high standard, and one worth meeting."

The Washington press corps has spent five weeks without a regular sparring partner. Some outlets framed the vacancy as chaos. Others called it a power vacuum. What it actually was: a White House that decided the press didn't need daily hand-holding and functioned just fine without it. The fact that the administration ran smoothly through a five-week gap without a single formal briefing tells you everything about how much the briefing room matters to the people actually governing.

Now Zacharia steps into the role with her first briefing scheduled for Tuesday morning — and the White House press corps gets their podium back. The reporters will be ready with five weeks of pent-up questions. Zacharia is a lawyer who spent her career on live television defending positions the entire media establishment wanted torn apart.
