Ilhan Omar Danced to a Song About Conquering America — Then Someone Translated It

At first glance, it's the most harmless video Ilhan Omar has ever posted.

The Minnesota congresswoman strolls along a lake with her husband, Tim Mynett. The sun is out and the water is calm. The caption reads: "Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes."

The 27-second clip went up late last week and almost nobody who saw it could understand the song playing underneath.

It's a Somali hip-hop diss track called "Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya," by rapper Ilkacase Qays, featuring singer Hodan Abdirahman. According to a certified professional translation of the lyrics, it's a song about humiliating your enemies.

"No enemy dares to threaten me," one line goes. Another promises that the singer's enemies will "suffer and cry." Others describe keeping an enemy awake all night. And one says: "If I confront you in the afternoon, by evening, I will teach you a lesson and keep you."

Here is the video for you to see (and hear) it for yourself

The timing is what makes the song choice hard to brush off.

Eleven days before Omar posted that video, Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington home. They seized her phone, passport, computers, and notebooks. Federal investigators are examining whether she or her late father lied on her naturalization paperwork, and they're looking into her 2009 marriage. In a court filing, the Justice Department referred to her as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar."

The U.S. Attorney for D.C., Jeanine Pirro, is also reviewing Omar's financial disclosures. President Trump has said she should resign, and he has raised the possibility of deportation.

So, with federal agents going through her belongings, Omar posted a calm, smiling video for her English-speaking followers. Her Somali-speaking followers heard a song about making your enemies pay.

This wasn't a random track that came up on shuffle. Qays, who calls himself the "King of Somali Hip Hop," is someone Omar knows. Footage shows her singing and dancing to this same song with Qays and Abdirahman at a party in May. In June, she was filmed dancing beside Qays at the Somali Global Awards in Minneapolis. Qays has campaigned for left-wing Democrats in Minnesota, and last year he endorsed Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for reelection.

Her defenders will say it's just a song with a good beat, and that nobody agrees with every lyric of every song they like. That's a hard case to make for Omar. She built her political career as the voice of Minnesota's Somali community, and she has sung along to this song in public. She knows what it says.

Omar hasn't explained the song choice. Her office didn't respond when asked about it. She has answered the investigation in English, though. "For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns," she said. "I will not be silenced."

The song had already made that point, in Somali: "No enemy dares to threaten me."
