Feds Search Ilhan Omar's D.C. Home as Immigration Fraud Investigation Closes In

Homeland Security Investigations agents showed up at Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington, D.C. home and executed a search. The 44-year-old Minnesota Democrat — who has spent a decade calling every inquiry into her background a racist smear — now has federal agents going through her things.

Her communications director, Jacklyn Rogers, called it "an outrageous abuse of power." The investigation into Omar's immigration paperwork says otherwise.

The search is tied to long-running allegations that Omar committed immigration fraud, potentially including falsifying her father Nur Omar Mohamed's citizenship application and entering a fraudulent marriage to keep a relative in the country. Those allegations first surfaced publicly during her 2016 campaign, and they never went away — because the questions were never answered.

The central claim: that Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009 while still in a relationship with Ahmed Hirsi, whom she'd applied for a marriage license with back in 2002. Omar and Hirsi separated in 2008. She married Elmi in 2009. They separated in 2011. She didn't file for a formal divorce from Elmi until 2017. She married Hirsi in 2018.

That timeline has fueled allegations of bigamy and suspicions that the Elmi marriage was an immigration arrangement. Former campaign spokesman Ben Goldfarb once dismissed the claims as "categorically ridiculous and false." But categorically ridiculous things don't usually end with HSI agents at your front door.

The investigation doesn't exist in a vacuum. Joseph Edlow, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, oversaw Operation Twin Shield — a joint effort by USCIS, the FBI, and ICE in Minnesota's Twin Cities area that flagged over 1,000 cases of suspected immigration fraud. Omar came to the United States in 1995 after living in a refugee camp in Kenya. Minneapolis is home to a large Somali community, and the operation specifically targeted paperwork fraud in that pipeline.

Vice President JD Vance confirmed the Department of Justice review back in May 2026. "I don't want to prejudge an investigation," Vance said. "It certainly seems like something fishy is there. If we think that there's a crime, we're going to prosecute that crime, and that's something the Department of Justice is looking at right now."

Rogers' full statement is worth reading in its entirety: "This raid by Trump's DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies. For a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly targeted congresswoman Ilhan Omar with inflammatory rhetoric, repeatedly putting a target on her back. Now, those attacks have escalated to a pointless federal raid. The congresswoman has done nothing wrong."

Every sentence of that statement assumes the conclusion. The search is "pointless" — before anyone knows what was found. The congresswoman "has done nothing wrong" — before the investigation is complete. The whole thing is "weaponization" — which requires you to believe that a USCIS operation that flagged over 1,000 fraud cases was designed around a single congresswoman. Operation Twin Shield existed before Omar became a political figure. She just happened to be in the pile.

Omar herself posted that she "will not be silenced." Nobody asked her to be silent. They asked her to explain the marriage timeline, the citizenship paperwork, and the discrepancies in her father's application. She's been talking for a decade. Explaining is the part she skipped.

At a December 2025 rally, President Trump referenced the allegations directly: "She married her brother in order to get in, right? She married her brother. Can you imagine if Donald Trump married his sister?"

The political class will frame this as persecution. They always do when accountability reaches someone on their team. But the timeline is the timeline. The marriages are the marriages. The paperwork either checks out or it doesn't.

A thousand cases flagged. One of them is a sitting member of Congress.
