An Episcopalian priestess stood before her congregation and declared that Mary "assigned Jesus gender at birth" — and that Jesus Christ was, in fact, transgender. The clip went viral within hours. A Community Note corrected it even faster.
The correction cited Luke 1:31 directly: "But the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.'"
That's the angel Gabriel, speaking to Mary before the birth. Not a gender reveal party. Not a social construct. A direct, pre-birth announcement from an archangel that the child would be a son. The text has been sitting there for about two thousand years. It is not ambiguous.
Townhall columnist Matt Vespa flagged the clip with the kind of bewilderment that doesn't require theology credentials. "Folks, I'm not religious. Raised Catholic, I haven't been to church in over 20 years," Vespa wrote. His assessment was blunter than most seminary papers: "What the hell is this?"

The Episcopal Church has spent the last two decades bleeding congregants at a rate that would alarm any organization not actively trying to empty its own pews. What remains is a denomination so eager to signal its relevance to secular culture that it's now rewriting the foundational text of its own religion — not through scholarly argument, not through historical analysis, but through a TikTok-ready sermon clip that wouldn't survive a first-year divinity school exam.
The priestess's claim rests on a single rhetorical move: applying the language of modern gender theory to a first-century Jewish birth narrative and hoping nobody checks. "Mary assigned Jesus gender at birth" borrows the clinical phrasing of "assigned male at birth" — a term from contemporary medical contexts — and pastes it onto the Gospel of Luke as if the two frameworks are interchangeable. They aren't. Luke's account doesn't describe Mary making a decision. It describes Mary receiving information.
As Vespa put it: "Mary is woke; Jesus, our lord and Savior, is trans. Absolute insanity."
The Community Note that landed on the clip didn't editorialize. It simply stated the fact: "Mary did not assign a gender to Jesus. Mary was told before his birth that Jesus would be a male." Then it quoted the verse. That was enough.
The progressive project doesn't stop at policy, doesn't stop at language, doesn't stop at children's curricula. It reaches backward through history and reinterprets figures who cannot object. The Founders were white supremacists. Lincoln was complicated. And now the central figure of Christianity — a religion practiced by roughly 2.4 billion people worldwide — gets retroactively claimed for a movement that didn't exist until the last few decades of American academic life.
The Episcopal Church had 3.5 million members in 1970. By 2020 that number had fallen below 1.6 million. Congregations that spend Sunday mornings explaining why their own scriptures don't mean what they say tend to discover that people stop showing up.
