Democrats Shut Down Homeland Security During a War Because ICE Agents Won’t Show Their Faces

The United States is at war with Iran. American jets are flying combat missions in the Middle East. The FBI is warning about Iranian sleeper cells on American soil. And Senate Democrats decided this was the perfect moment to shut down the Department of Homeland Security because ICE agents wear masks during raids.

You cannot make this stuff up, folks.

Here’s what happened. After two people were killed during immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis in January — Renee Good on January 7 and Alex Pretti on January 24 — Democrats decided the solution wasn’t an investigation or a policy review. No, the solution was to hold the entire Department of Homeland Security hostage until ICE agents agree to unmask themselves, wear body cameras, get judicial warrants before every arrest, and pinky-promise never to enforce immigration law near a school, church, hospital, or polling place.

Senate Democrats blocked the DHS funding bill on February 12. Every single Democrat voted against it except one — John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. (More on him in a minute.) The bill needed 60 votes. It got 51. DHS has been shut down ever since.

Now here’s the part that makes you want to bang your head against a wall. The shutdown doesn’t even affect ICE. ICE already has $75 billion in funding from Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” that passed last year. ICE is fully operational. The agents Democrats are mad at? Still working. Still wearing masks. Still making arrests.

You know who IS affected? TSA workers. The ones screening your bags at the airport. They got a partial paycheck on February 28 and are about to miss their first full check on March 14. Airport security lines at Houston Hobby are stretching to three hours. New Orleans, Atlanta, Charlotte — all reporting massive delays. Airlines are telling passengers to show up four to five hours early.

So let’s get this straight. Democrats shut down Homeland Security to punish ICE agents — who aren’t affected by the shutdown — and the actual casualties are TSA screeners working without pay and millions of travelers stuck in security lines that wrap around the terminal. Brilliant strategy.

Border czar Tom Homan laid out the math on “Face the Nation” that Democrats apparently can’t do. Assaults against ICE officers are up 1,500 percent. Threats against them are up 8,000 percent. “I don’t like the masks either,” Homan said, “but these men and women have to protect themselves.” Democrats want ICE agents to wear name tags so the cartels can Google them and find their kids’ schools. What a generous offer.

And then there’s Fetterman. The only Democrat who voted to fund DHS looked at his colleagues and basically said: “What are you doing?” He pointed out that the shutdown has “zero impact on ICE functionality” but hammers the Coast Guard, FEMA, and cybersecurity operations. During a war. With Iran.

Hakeem Jeffries responded by demanding “dramatic change” before any funding moves forward. Because nothing says “we care about working Americans” like letting TSA agents skip meals so you can score political points about masks.

Here’s what nobody in the Democratic caucus seems to remember: we’ve seen this exact play before. In 2015, Republicans held DHS funding hostage to block Obama’s DACA executive action. Senate Democrats filibustered every funding bill. The shutdown lasted about a week. Mitch McConnell caved, split the immigration provision off, and passed a clean DHS bill. Republicans got absolutely nothing. Zero. The whole exercise accomplished nothing except making them look stupid.

Guess who’s running the 2015 Republican playbook right now? Chuck Schumer. The roles have completely reversed — and the ending is going to be the same. The party holding DHS hostage always loses. Always.

But wait — it gets worse for Democrats. There are currently seven Democratic senators defending seats in states that are, let’s say, not enthusiastic about protecting illegal aliens from deportation. Gary Peters’ open seat in Michigan. Jon Ossoff in Georgia. Both states Trump won in 2024. Every single day this shutdown drags on with American troops fighting in the Middle East, Republican campaign committees are filming attack ads that write themselves: “Senator Ossoff voted to defund Homeland Security during a war with Iran so that ICE agents would have to wear name tags.”

(Try running on that in suburban Atlanta. Good luck.)

And here’s the second-order effect nobody’s talking about yet. DHS Intelligence and Analysis — the people whose job is to track sleeper cells and domestic terror threats — is running at roughly 50 percent staffing because of the furloughs. A nonpartisan report this week estimated that detection rates for high-risk individuals have dropped from 90 percent to somewhere between 70 and 80 percent. Sleeper cell access risk is up 20 to 35 percent. During a shooting war with Iran.

Democrats are so obsessed with making ICE agents take off their masks that they’ve effectively blinded the intelligence analysts whose job is to stop the next domestic attack. Mark my words — if something happens on American soil while DHS is running on fumes because Hakeem Jeffries wanted body cameras on immigration agents, the Democratic Party will own that moment for a generation.

The 2015 playbook ends one way. The hostage-takers fold. The only question is how much damage Senate Democrats are willing to do to their own 2026 midterm candidates before they figure that out.
