California’s gubernatorial three-ring circus just got a new ringmaster, and his name is Matt Mahan — the San Jose mayor who apparently got tired of watching the state collapse under progressive policies and decided to do something about it. In a Democratic field packed with the usual suspects and a few political fossils, Mahan’s sudden rise in betting markets has been nothing short of a political plot twist even Hollywood would reject for being too implausible.
Let’s set the scene. California: the Golden State, now mostly known for golden gas prices, tent cities, and the kind of bureaucratic incompetence that makes DMV lines feel like a spa day. Enter Matt Mahan, a Silicon Valley Democrat who’s made a name for himself by doing the unthinkable in California politics — criticizing Governor Gavin Newsom.
Mahan’s odds to win the governor’s seat shot up to 36% on Polymarket right after announcing his candidacy. That’s a meteoric rise in a party where the only thing that usually rises is taxes. The only person ahead of him? Representative Eric Swalwell, who’s best known for cheating on his first wife with a Chinese spy named Fang Fang. China sent Fang Fang to get get into bed with high-level politicians and hopefully gain access to high-level government information and boy did she succeed! Swalwell is sitting at 45% in the betting markets, which says more about the sorry state of Democratic leadership than anything else.
Katie Porter, once the darling of liberal wine moms everywhere, has plummeted to a measly 9%, thanks in no small part to multiple videos of her verbally demolishing staffers. What a sweetheart that Katie is! And then there’s Tom Steyer, the billionaire climate crusader polling at 7%, who immediately went on the offensive, accusing Mahan of being a Big Tech puppet. Which is rich coming from a guy who made his billions in finance and then decided to cosplay as a man of the people.
Steyer’s spokesperson delivered the usual grab-bag of progressive talking points, saying California needs someone who “stands up to powerful interests.” You know, like the kind that fund the campaigns of Democrats and then get sweetheart deals in return. The only thing more hilarious than that statement is watching Democrats accuse each other of being too corporate — it’s like watching a food fight at Whole Foods.
Meanwhile, former LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and others are polling so low they’d need a ladder just to see single digits. The field is so underwhelming, it makes you nostalgic for Gray Davis.
Mahan’s pitch? A return to basics. Less internet trolling, more dealing with the actual crises haunting California like a bad sequel. Homelessness, unaffordability, crime — all those things Democrats pretend to solve by throwing taxpayer money into a fire pit while lecturing everyone on equity.
The irony? Mahan is still a Democrat. But in a state where being “moderate” means you only want to ban gas stoves on weekdays, he might as well be Ronald Reagan reincarnated. He’s targeting independents and disillusioned Dems — and judging by his surge in the odds, a lot of people are ready to swipe left on California’s far-left leadership.
A recent poll showed a fractured landscape, with no one cracking more than 17% before Mahan entered the race. Now, he’s jumped the line like a VIP at a Hollywood club, leaving his rivals wondering what happened while they were busy rehearsing their climate change monologues.
So here we are. In a state drowning in dysfunction thanks to years of Democrat mismanagement, the guy making the biggest splash is the one criticizing the circus from inside the tent. Matt Mahan might not be the hero California deserves, but if he can beat out the likes of Swalwell and Porter, he might just be the one it needs to stop the state from becoming a real-life episode of “Survivor: Failed State Edition.”
