If you were hoping to fly home this Thanksgiving without a side of turbulence and government-induced mayhem, then congratulations—you live in a fantasy. The FAA just grounded the holiday spirit by announcing that 40 major airports across the country will be slashing flights by 10 percent starting today, November 7. Why? Because Democrats in the Senate are too busy playing chicken with the government’s checkbook to actually fund, well, the government.
This isn’t just some mild inconvenience like running out of pumpkin pie filling. We’re talking about the busiest airports in the world throttling traffic just weeks before the most hectic travel season of the year. Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta—yes, the busiest airport on planet Earth—is on the list. So are LAX, JFK, Miami, and Chicago O’Hare. Basically, if your flight was supposed to take off from anywhere besides your cousin Eddie’s backyard airstrip, you might want to start exploring alternate methods of transportation. Camel, anyone?
The FAA, which normally oversees more than 44,000 flights a day, is running on fumes. Air traffic controllers are still working—God bless them—but they’re doing it without pay. That’s right, the same people who prevent 747s from turning into bumper cars are currently getting paid in “thoughts and prayers” from the United States Senate.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford looked like someone trying to defuse a bomb with a toothpick when he said, “We can’t ignore it… If the pressures continue to build… we’ll come back and take additional measures.” Translation: this is bad, and it’s about to get worse. Even Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy admitted it’ll be “really rough” out there if the shutdown drags on through Thanksgiving. That’s the political equivalent of yelling “Brace for impact” while the plane’s still on the runway.
And let’s talk about who’s driving this disaster. Republicans hold a 53–47 majority in the Senate, but they need 60 votes to pass a continuing resolution and end the shutdown. So what’s the holdup? Democrats, of course. The same party that wants to spend $7 trillion on climate change, gender studies, and free college for your neighbor’s cat won’t sign off on a basic government funding bill that includes national defense, border security, and yes, air traffic control.
Duffy laid it out plainly: “I don’t have access to money to pay air traffic controllers during this shutdown. Congress has said there is no money… My message to Democrats is to sit down, figure it out, and not hold the American people hostage.” Preach, Secretary Duffy. But the Democrats aren’t listening. They’re too busy staging performative protests and tweeting about “equity in aviation,” whatever that means. Maybe they think delayed flights are a form of social justice?
The truth is, this shutdown isn’t just a failure of leadership—it’s a deliberate act of political hostage-taking by the left. They’re hoping the chaos will make Republicans look bad, but all they’ve done is expose how little they care about the average American trying to make it home for the holidays.
So if your Thanksgiving plans now involve a 12-hour layover in Newark or a surprise overnight stay in Terminal C, go ahead and thank a Democrat. They’re proving once again that they can ground planes and common sense with equal efficiency.
