A Crazy Thing People Will Do for Money

What’s the Deal with Human Billboards?

Can You Really Make Money Doing This?

10:21 AM

“Hey Marc: I’ve read about people making money as human billboards and by posting advertising on their cars, backpacks or bikes.  But can you really make money doing this”?

G.T. Glendale AZ

Dear Entrepreneur:

This isn’t for everyone.  But it’ll give you a glimpse into what may play a role in the future of advertising.  I’m talking about human billboards!

Now hang on….

I’m not insane….and I realize there are a lot of kooks tattooing company logos on different parts of the body.

But seriously…. you can make money by wearing advertising on your clothes, hat, on your car and even with tattoos on your body.

I know what you’re thinking….but don’t delete my email until you’ve heard me out.  I promise you’ll learn something “relevant”.

Here’s the deal…..

There’s a company in Dallas Texas called CI Host. They’re a Web-hosting and software development company.  They hired a guy (Jim Nelson) to become a “human billboard” for them.

Jim agreed to tattoo the company’s logo on the back of his shaved head… for $7,000.  But there were some conditions for collecting the loot.

Jim was required to leave his house every day for a minimum amount of time to insure maximum exposure. He also had to keep the tattoo visible for five years!

This advertising ploy attracted worldwide media attention and created a small frenzy. A picture of Jim’s head was downloaded from the Internet more than 3 million times!

CI Host CEO Christopher Faulkner said, “The Human Billboard is responsible for bringing in hundreds of new clients – a success by any means.”

And now … CI Host recently secured the rights for a second human billboard in Europe.  In an online auction, CI Host won the right to have their logo on the forehead of UK filmmaker Travis Hayes. Travis is required to wear the ad for at least 30 days.

Search “human billboards” on Google, and you’ll begin to see this is only the tip of the iceberg.

For example, Universal Planner Inc. is a Japanese ad agency which secures licensing rights for movies, computer graphics, TV shows, videos, and characters.  Universal Planner displays advertising content for their clients on a product called Chibi Vision. Their website seems to be a little outdated, but you’ll get the idea.

Known in Japan as the “walking billboard,” Chibi Vision is a backpack with a 7-inch LCD screen built into it.  People are wearing the Chibi Vision backpack around town and on the subway for a predetermined amount of time, and getting paid to do it!  But that’s not all…

Snyder Communications recently launched a program called “Headlines.”

“Headlines” are advertisements placed upon people’s foreheads with a temporary tattoo transfer. They are worn for up to three hours in “highly visible locations,” such as shopping malls, casinos, theme parks, and sporting events.

Snyder Communications is in talks with, or has secured deals with, top brands like Coca Cola, IBM, Dell, Amazon.com, ATT, Viagra, Verizon, and Nike.

Here are some REAL LIFE examples …

In an auction on eBay recently, Kirk Rodriguez of Oshawa, Ontario received a high bid of $3,260 from DNBuy Inc., a domain name registry, to place a headline ad on his forehead.

And another one…

Gyongyike Ene, a 25-year-old mother from Toronto, says heads turn when she walks into a room. She dresses well, her makeup is flawless, and her hair always looks like she just stepped out of a salon. She’s tall and her high heels make her look even taller.

“Sounds crazy, but believe me,” she boasts in her eBay auction, “I get confused with celebs a lot of times.” And if the price is right, Ms. Ene will allow your company to capitalize on her good looks by tattooing your brand name on her forehead.

Jason cashes in…

Jason Sadler gets paid to wear company logos and circulate a picture of himself on the Internet, social media sites and Twitter. He made more than $80,000 in 2009!

Human billboard and tattoo advertising is infiltrating professional sports, major trials, entertainment, the arts, and even the Olympics!

And there’s now a company – TatAD – that not only helps you make money by placing tattoos on yourself, but also offers “brandchise” licenses and kiosks to help you make money by placing them on others.

These Companies Secure Human Billboards…

Here’s a short list of companies and celebrities which utilize human billboards and tattoo advertising:

Getting Your Hands on Human Billboard CASH

You can contact any of the companies listed in this week’s issue, or start searching for companies online. New companies are jumping into the human billboard pool every day.

Granted, there are more scams than Quaker has oats too!

But if you connect with a reputable company or advertising agency, which has references and testimonials from current participants…, you’ll be fine.
